Wallace Township | Wallace Trail Preservation Association

Wallace Trail Preservation Association
Wallace Township contains a unique network of trails. Some of these pathways are more than a century old and a hundred miles long. They afford residents countless opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoyment. Trails preserve our rural atmosphere, foster physical and mental health, provide backyard neighborhood watch services, protect home values and reduce costs of municipal services. Because trails link various parts of the township and provide alternative means of transportation, they enhance our sense of community and well being. In short, trails make Wallace township a better place to live.

Unfortunately, the township’s logarithmic growth rate is putting our trails in jeopardy, so nature enthusiasts, hikers, horseback riders, cross-country skiers and mountain bicyclists have joined together to form the WTPA. Together we are working to preserve, protect and enhance the beauty, integrity and accessibility to trails we so enjoy. We invite you to join us and appreciate your support.
The Wallace Trail Preservation Association meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 PM at the Township Building.

Wallace Township’s rapid population growth is threatening its trails. To help preserve and protect these most precious yet vulnerable resources, local residents have created the Wallace Trail Preservation Association (WTPA). Our mission statement says it all:

“The WTPA serves to preserve, protect and enhance local trails for non-motorized recreational use.”

Significant challenges and sensitive issues need to be addressed, and the WTPA serves as a communications conduit among area residents, trail users, developers and the township’s leadership. We recognize that the use of trails is a privilege and the highest courtesy is due land owners. With this in mind, we strive to develop cooperative agreements, and we encourage strict adherence to our Code of Conduct below:
Trails may be used for non-motorized use only
Stay on the trail
Respect property owners and other trail users
Preserve and protect wildlife and other natural resources
Carry trash out - Do not litter
Don’t smoke or drink alcohol
Use personal electronics with headphones only
No hunting or trapping
No firearms or other weapons
No loitering
Never cut corners or cross planted fields or lawns
Keep dogs under control
Use caution and go slowly when passing fenced animals
Report unsafe conditions and suspicious activities
Never tread on soft sod
Leave gates and trails as you find them
Remember, trail use is a privilege — Be courteous

Maps
WTPA creates and maintains maps of the township's public and private trails. As a service to trail users, we plan to publish maps of public trails. Private trails are identified and discussed at our monthly meetings.
Advisor to Planning Commission
WTPA recommends trails to the Wallace Township Planning Commission. Our maps and written recommendations help the Commission preserve and protect trails in new developments and subdivisions.
Land Owner Contact
WTPA contacts trail land owners to discuss issues and opportunities. We meet with developers to assist in mapping trails early in the subdivision planning process.
Trail Creation & Maintenance
WTPA helps write grant applications to acquire and develop trails in Wallace Township. We also coordinate with various riding clubs and recreational organizations to create and maintain trails.
Communications & Education
WTPA links trail users, land owners and township leadership. We educate trail users on trail etiquette and encourage strict adherence to our "Code of Conduct." WTPA communicates the benefits of trails to land owners and the public. We also assist in resolving issues.
The Wallace Trail Preservation Board will be assisted by the Wallace Trail Preservation Association (WTPA), a group of township residents and/or users of Wallace's trail system, who are not necessarily members of the Wallace Trail Preservation Board, who are willing to volunteer their time in support of trail preservation activities as directed by Board members. The WTPA will add valuable man-power to assist preservation; members of the WTPA do not necessarily need to be township members.
